Media Release opposing the questioning of judicial integrity
On Tuesday 17 November, in a 4:1 majority decision, the Court of Appeal stated that the Victorian baseline sentencing laws are ‘incurably defective’.
Shadow attorney-general, Mr John Pesutto MP, has provided statements to The Age and The Herald Sun disagreeing with the decision made by the Court. He expressed that the Court’s decision is an ‘unbelievable rebuff’ of the will of Parliament. Former attorney-general, Hon. Robert Clark MP, also made a statement condemning the decision.
International Commission of Jurists Victoria strongly opposes members of parliament questioning the integrity of the judiciary in this way. Please see the attached Media Release confirming this position.
